Italian Easter Bread (Traditional Recipe)

Italian Easter Bread (Traditional Recipe)

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup of warm milk
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons of active dry yeast
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup of mixed candied fruit
  • 1/2 cup of raisins
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the melted butter and eggs to the yeast mixture and mix well.
  3. Gradually mix in the flour and salt until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Fold in the candied fruit and raisins until evenly distributed in the dough.
  5. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape them into braided loaves. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the loaves with the beaten egg wash.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  10. Remove from the oven and let the loaves cool before serving.
    Tips:
  • You can customize the toppings by sprinkling some colored sugar on top before baking.
  • Serve warm with butter or jam for a delicious breakfast treat.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
