Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in the vegetable oil and salt.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Cover the pan and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Remove from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
    Tips:
  • Make sure the water you use to dissolve the yeast is at the right temperature – too hot will kill the yeast, and too cold won’t activate it.
  • Kneading the dough helps develop the gluten, which gives the bread its fluffy texture.
  • Letting the dough rise in a warm place is important for a good rise – a cold environment will slow down the process.
  • To test if the bread is done, tap the bottom – if it sounds hollow, it’s ready!
