Flaky Homemade Croissants
Ingredients :
3 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, cold
- 1 egg, for egg wash
Directions:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and stir until it forms a dough.
- Roll the dough into a square and place the cold butter in the center. Fold the corners of the dough over the butter to completely encase it.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle and fold it into thirds like a letter. Repeat this process three times, then refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough one final time into a large rectangle. Cut triangles out of the dough and roll them up tightly to form croissants.
- Place the croissants on a baking sheet, cover with a towel, and allow them to rise for 1-2 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Brush the croissants with egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.
Tips:
- Make sure the butter is cold when incorporating it into the dough to create those flaky layers.
- Allow the croissants to rise in a warm, draft-free place for the best results.
- Serve warm with a spread of jam or butter for a delicious breakfast treat.
