How to Make Perfect Artisan Bread
Ingredients:
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- Cornmeal, for dusting
Directions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F and place a baking stone or overturned baking sheet inside to preheat.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal.
- Let the dough rise for another 30 minutes while the oven preheats.
- Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Allow the bread to cool before slicing and serving.
Tips:
- For a crusty exterior, place a pan of water in the bottom of the oven while baking.
- You can customize your bread by adding herbs, seeds, or cheese to the dough before baking.
