How to Make Perfect Artisan Bread

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • Cornmeal, for dusting

Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 450°F and place a baking stone or overturned baking sheet inside to preheat.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal.
  7. Let the dough rise for another 30 minutes while the oven preheats.
  8. Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Allow the bread to cool before slicing and serving.
    Tips:
  • For a crusty exterior, place a pan of water in the bottom of the oven while baking.
  • You can customize your bread by adding herbs, seeds, or cheese to the dough before baking.
