Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups cubed bread
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup (half stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins
    Vanilla Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk and butter until the butter is melted. Pour over the cubed bread in a large bowl and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vanilla, and nutmeg. Pour this mixture over the soaked bread and add the raisins. Stir gently to combine.
  4. Transfer the bread mixture to the prepared baking dish and bake for 40-50 minutes, or until set and golden brown.
  5. While the bread pudding is baking, make the vanilla sauce. In a saucepan, melt the butter and sugars together. Stir in the cream and vanilla extract, and let simmer until thickened.
  6. Once the bread pudding is done, pour the warm vanilla sauce over the top before serving.
    Tips:
  • For a twist, try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or a handful of chopped nuts to the bread pudding.
  • Leftover bread pudding can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated in the microwave for a quick and delicious dessert.
